Sesame (Sesamum indicum) is one of the oldest oilseed crops known to mankind, prized for its rich oil content and nutritional value. Nigeria is one of the leading producers in Africa, supplying both local industries and international markets. Sesame seeds are small, oval-shaped, and come in a variety of colors including white, brown, and black. They are highly valued for their high oil content (about 45–55%), rich protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Globally, sesame is in demand for use in oil extraction, confectionery, bakery, tahini, sesame snacks, and animal feed. In Nigeria, sesame is often referred to as “beniseed” and is cultivated mainly in the northern states such as Benue, Nassarawa, Jigawa, and Kano. The country’s sesame is recognized internationally for its quality, especially the white sesame variety, which is highly sought after in export markets like Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
